  Internet Explorer 5.0 Issue
You cannot log into the system at all if you are using IE 5.0 Service Pack 1. If you click the Continue button after reading the warning that you are using an unsupported browser, you will receive a "Page cannot be found" error. This is due to the unsupported encryption algorithms included in IE 5.0 SP1. Although Internet Explorer 5.0 is not a supported browser, you can log in to the system with IE 5.0 if you are using Service Pack 2. However, once logged in, you may still experience usability issues. We recommend that if you are using IE 5.0 on a Windows platform, you upgrade to version 6.0 for best performance.

  Dial-up Users
Some dial-up Internet Service Providers (ISP) use the new "web accelerator" technology. For example: Netscape with Web Accelerator™, NetZero HiSpeed 3G™, or AOL TopSpeed™. If your ISP uses the web accelerator technology you may receive a "Session Timed Out" error message when attempting to log into myAVC. If you experience this problem you will need to contact your ISP to learn how to disable the web accelerator while accessing myAVC.

  AOL & MSN Users
The AOL and MSN browsers that are supplied with your service have been modified specifically for the AOL and MSN internet services, however, they do not always support other web sites. In order to access and use myAVC you will need to use one of the supported browsers. (If your computer uses any of the Microsoft Windows operating systems, chances are you already have Internet Explorer.) If you don't have a supported browser you need to download one.
  • Sign into AOL or MSN as you normally do.
  • Minimize the AOL or MSN browser.
  • Open the supported browser.
  • Log into myAVC.

      Popup Blockers
In order to access myAVC you need to enable popup windows. You must add the following URLs to the "allowed" list for your popup blocker.
    • myavc.avc.edu
    • mymail.avc.edu
Most current web browsers have built-in popup blockers. Please refer to your browsers online help if you have questions on adding these sites to the allowed list.

    Third Party Popup Blockers/Toolbars
You may also have a third party popup blocker installed. Many popular toolbars such as the Yahoo Toolbar, Yahoo Companion, MSN toolbar, or the Google Toolbar have popup blockers built into them. If you are using Internet Explorer, go to View > Toolbars. Uncheck all toolbars except for the following:
    • Standard Buttons
    • Address Bar
    • Links
    • Lock the Toolbars
Detailed instructions for many popular toolbars can be found here.      Disabling PopUp Blockers.pdf (30kb)

      Netscape JRE Issue
In order to use the Chat application provided by myAVC, your Internet browser must be able to access and run a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). In some cases a JVM is provided by your operating system. In other cases, the browser adds a JVM to your computer when it is installed. With Netscape browsers, the JVM is included during installation as part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). However, in some installations of Netscape, the JRE is an optional installation choice. If your Netscape browser does not have a JRE installed or enabled, you will see a warning message when you first access myAVC. If you click continue, you should be able to use all system functionality with the exception of Chat. The first time you try to use Chat without a JVM, you will be prompted to install a plugin. If you accept the plugin, a JVM will be installed and configured for your Netscape browser and you will no longer see the warning message when you try to access myAVC.
